Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse scores a record-breaking opening for the month of December for an animated movie as it has a 3-day opening of $35.4 million.
The Sony film beats out Universal and Illumination’s Sing which held the previous record for December with a $35.2 million opening.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse also has an “A+” CinemaScore and a current 97% Rotten Tomatoes score, with 95% of the audience stating they liked it.
The flick also adds another $21 million from its international box office for a current worldwide cume of $56.4 million.
Sony already announced a Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy sequel is in the works in addition to a Gwen Stacy and the women of Spider-Man spinoff.
Also opening this weekend includes Peter Jackson’s Mortal Engines, which unfortunately didn’t have enough steam as it tanked at the box office coming in at #5 with $7.5 million.
The top five for this weekend include:
- Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – $35.4 million
- The Mule – $17.210 million
- Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch (2018) – $11.580 million
- Ralph Breaks the Internet – $9.589 million
- Mortal Engines – $7.5 million
Worth mentioning is that Aquaman continues to be a huge draw in international markets as it now passes $250 million and stands at a current worldwide box office gross of $261.3 million. The movie still has yet to open in the U.S. and additional foreign markets, so things are looking good for the DCEU film starring Jason Momoa and directed by James Wan.
Update: Aquaman also netted $2.9 million for its Amazon U.S. preview which beats the Jumanji Prime preview.
