Prior to the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Disney announced Rian Johnson would be helming a new trilogy, but there has been question if it will still happen.
Following me speculating that Disney may have canceled Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy, the director did confirm on Twitter he is still working on it, but now a new report further suggests the flick might not see the light of day.
In THR’s report on Kathleen Kennedy’s LucasFilm contract getting extended for another three years, it is said that (emphasis my own): “Lucasfilm is developing feature projects from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.”
However, regarding the Rian Johnson Star Wars Trilogy, it’s said: “a potential trilogy from Rian Johnson.”
It’s also further said that Rian Johnson is now working on a different movie: “currently prepping to shoot a detective thriller that is to star Daniel Craig.”
Here is the full blurb from the article:
Lucasfilm is developing feature projects from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, as well as a potential trilogy from Rian Johnson, the filmmaker behind Last Jedi. Johnson, however, is currently prepping to shoot a detective thriller that is to star Daniel Craig.
So we see the report states LucasFilm IS developing the Benioff and Weiss Star Wars project, but the Rian Johnson Star Wars is only a POTENTIAL trilogy — which means not guaranteed to happen.
The info follows Disney CEO Bob Iger recently stating they are putting the brakes on any new Star Wars movies, which corroborates what LucasFilm production designer Neil Lamont had to say prior to Iger’s comments.
Lamont said he was working on a new Star Wars movie that got placed on the backburner, which sounded a lot like the Rian Johnson Star Wars movie.
While the future of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy is unknown, the recent news confirms no new Star War movies are currently in the works, and also that Johnson is now working on a different movie.
