Thanos Is Darth Vader For A New Generation Says Avengers: Infinity War Director Joe Russo

We are a little more than three months away from the debut of The Avengers: Infinity War, which will see Marvel’s Assemblers face their toughest foe yet–Thanos the Mad Titan.

In a new interview with Empire Magazine (via CBM), The Avengers: Infinity War director Joe Russo goes so far as to compare Thanos to Darth Vader.

“Darth Vader was the pre-eminent villain of my childhood, and we’re hoping to make a Darth Vader for a new generation. We’re hoping he has that complexity to him, and that he strikes fear into the heart of the audience, but at the same time they go on a journey with him. Frankly, Avengers 3 is his movie,” Russo said.

There has been a bit of skepticism online regarding the look of Thanos as the character is CGI. Noted comic book writer Mark Millar recently slammed the use of CGI characters, and now Joe Russo tackles the question if Thanos will look good enough.

“It’s very important to us that Thanos has a level of photorealism that makes that audience believe him,” Russo said.

Marvel Studios debuted exclusive The Avengers: Infinity War footage at this past Summer’s Comic-Con, which isn’t featured in the new trailer, that featured Thanos blowing up a moon, and Russo offers that’s only the tip of the iceberg!

“That’s one of many things Thanos does in this film. He’s an incredible threat!” Russo exclaimed.

Josh Brolin touched on the Infinity Stones a while back, which is the reason why Thanos heads to Earth and battles the Avengers.

“Every one represents a power. A massive power. And all of them together, the ultimate power,” Brolin recently told Good Morning America. “There’s a few in [The Avengers: Infinity War trailer], and he’s always pining to get another one in there. So ultimately, we don’t know. I haven’t done the second movie, so I don’t know. I literally don’t know what the second script [for Avengers 4] is. I don’t know if they finished the second script. That’s the truth. I don’t know. I think that they are in the midst of structuring  and restructuring.”

Josh Brolin also offered their is more to Thanos than brawn.

“The thing with Thanos that you don’t understand is there is times when it can become psychological and not necessarily brute force. Interesting. More interesting for adults now. Maybe not for kids–not that statement, but to you, your eyes kind of glimmered. Intelligence, man. Intelligence. Diving right in. It is a smart movie. It is a really smart movie,” Brolin said. “He’s a smart character. I had no idea. In all truth. When I did the teaser, we had like thirty-six cameras or something, and I sat on a seat, and I wasn’t working with anybody. Now like being actually involved and interacting.. I can’t. I want to mention characters, and I can’t, but of the characters that are in it, it’s way more emotional and way more interactive than I thought. So it’s actually a lot of fun and a lot deeper than I thought. A lot more emotional than I thought.”
