Earlier it became known that Fox Studios and Marvel Studios swapped characters to appear in Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
The deal saw the Deadpool movie get to change the powers of Nega Sonic Teenage Warhead, and in return Marvel Studios got the use of Ego The Living Planet for Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

“Haha yes that’s true. I don’t think Fox knew what a big piece of the cosmic universe puzzle he was going to be,” Gunn said about Ego the Living Planet, which is played by Kurt Russell.
James Gunn continues seemingly confirming that Ego the Living Planet was originally a part of his Guardians of the Galaxy 2 script (even though they didn’t have the rights) as Gunn says “and I had no backup” — meaning he didn’t have a different character in mind to use other than Ego.

After I had worked out a very elaborate story with Ego the Living Planet as a very important part of the Marvel cosmic universe, I learned that we actually didn’t own the character. I had no back up plan, and it would be nearly impossible to just drop another character in. Thank God Fox came to us and wanted to make a trade…
