Following the success of Deadpool and Logan, some fans are hoping that Marvel Studios should do an R-rated movie.
However, that’s not going to happen any time soon as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige fills in THR that he thinks the reason for Deadpool and Logan‘s success is not because they are R-rated, but how they were presented, and Feige may have a good point.
“My takeaway from both of those films is not the R rating, it’s the risk they took, the chances they took, the creative boundaries that they pushed. That should be the takeaway for everyone.”
The article further notes that Feige cited the breaking of the fourth wall in Deadpool and the finality of the Hugh Jackman Wolverine story as examples of what made those movies successful.
It’s possible Feige might be on to something as it could be argued all the swearing (and some nudity in Deadpool) wasn’t needed to make Deadpool and Logan good films. Or was it? Would the movies have been the same with no swearing and assumed toned-down violence?
Feige also offers the humor found in Marvel movies isn’t going anywhere as well, which is a bummer as it sounds like we’ll never get a Marvel Studios serious movie akin to Man of Steel or Batman v Superman (but obviously better):
We don’t sit there and say We need 15 jokes in the first 45 pages, but it just is something that we are naturally entertained by. Certainly in the Guardians films as James would point out, in the Ant-Man films — it might rise to the surface more. It’s been a long time that we haven’t done a screening of a film that humor and action aren’t the top two things that are listed in those movies.”
