George Takei & Wil Wheaton Not A Big Fan Of Star Trek Beyond Trailer

Max Landis isn’t the only one not to like the recent Star Trek Beyond trailer.

Sulu himself, George Takei, wasn’t thrilled with what he saw in director Justin Lin’s first trailer.

“Oh, my. It doesn’t have that element that made Star Trek – Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek – what it was,” Takei told Tech Insider in the below video.

Takei did note, it may not be all that bad.

“It looks like a terrific action-adventure movie,” Takei said. “A lot of clinging on cliffs and getting smashed against rocks [laughs]. It should be a very successful Star Trek movie… I didn’t, in the preview, note anything of the substance of what made Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek so engaging, and it was the commentary on social justice, political realities of the time, current events of our time…”

Regarding Wil Wheaton, whom some may argue shouldn’t be saying too much as a lot of Trekkers weren’t too happy with his Next Generation character, Wesley Crusher, offered the following on Twitter: “I saw the weirdest trailer today. It was for a generic science fiction action movie, but it was all dressed up in Star Trek costumes.”

William Shatner has yet to offer up his own thoughts.

“Star Trek Beyond” has a July 22, 2016 release directed by Justin Lin starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Sofia Boutella and Idris Elba.
