Not All Marvel Cosmic Movies Will Be Like Guardians of the Galaxy Says James Gunn

With Guardians of the Galaxy being such a hit for Marvel Studios and Thor: Ragnarok looking likely to have a similar tone, does that mean all the Marvel Cosmic Universe movies going forward will be similar?

The good news for Marvel COSMIC comic book fans is that the answer is no, as Collider asked James Gunn if the cosmic movies in the future will share the same tone.

No, I don’t think so. I would hope that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole, every movie has its own feel and tone.  And so, if it’s a James Gunn movie, it’s different than a Ryan Coogler movie, which is different than a Taika [Waititi] movie, which is different from than a Peyton Reed movie.  I think all the movies can be their own genre, can be their own thing–in the same way that if you grew up reading Marvel Comics, the different comic books, the writers and the artists of the comic books brought very different tones to each of those.”

It’s already been said that following the Avengers 4, the MCU looks to be more COSMIC with James Gunn leading the way, sort of similar to a showrunner or how Kevin Feige is in charge of the rest of the MCU. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is up next, but what happens after is anybody’s guess. Gunn did reveal that following Guardians of the Galaxy 3, the team in the next movie will be different.

I also know a lot of fans are hoping for a Richard Rider Nova movie, and with James Gunn offering not all the Marvel Cosmic movies will be similar in tone (a goofy version of Nova would be awful), I have high hopes Marvel Studios might do some sort of serious military science-fiction take on Nova. I suppose like Gunn says, that it depends on the director, so let’s hope there is a SF director that comes on board a Nova movie.

It would also rock if Marvel Studios could get the Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer and Galactus rights back from Fox Studios. Stan Lee just said he wants a new Silver Surfer movie. I believe James Gunn also said he would like Annihilus back from Fox Studios, so who knows, maybe in the future some sort of adaptation of Annihilation could happen at Marvel?
