Wilson, Lopez return the magic to Marvel Crossgen’s ‘Mystic’

Don’t let the title fool you, Marvelites. This book has nothing to do with either Dr. Strange or Dr. Voodoo. But it does have to do with a third Crossgen product being re-launched by the House of Ideas.

First there was Sigil, then Ruse and now a four-issue mini-series totally revamping the mythos of — Mystic!

Eisner Award-nominated writer G. Willow Wilson (Air, Superman, Cairo) and superstar artist David Lopez (Hawkeye & Mockingbird, Catwoman) have join forces to bring you the story of two seemingly ordinary girls who find their lives turned upside down by magic; one of them will find herself responsible for saving the world and the other as her mortal enemy!

In a CBR interview, Wilson explains that “the new Mystic is about two orphan girls who live in a poor area of this beautiful city, Hyperion, which is run on aether-power technology, which is somewhere between steampunk and high-fantasy. They’ve secretly been teaching themselves the Noble Arts, this kind of magical technology that powers the world, which in theory only the Nobility is allowed to study. In the midst of a revolution, one of them gets plucked out of her world and gets sucked into this palace world where she gets to learn more about aether technology as the Royal Apprentice. I won’t say much more than that because there’s a lot of little twists and things, but that’s the gist. It’s a high-fantasy Mean Girls meets Les Miserable.”

Wilson said the new Mystic is a total revamp of the product, and readers of the old Crossgen mag “… probably won’t recognize a whole lot from that comic in this new re-launch. The new Mystic has elements of political stuff in it, but it is not nearly as hardcore as some of my political writing has been. It’s very character-driven; the emphasis is much more on the two main characters, Giselle and Genevieve, and their adventures. So it’s a little more fantasy, and a little more character-driven than some of the stuff I’ve done before.”

The scribe said co-creating a whole new world – Mystic does not take place in the Marvel Universe –  with artist David Lopez has been wonderful. “David  … did an amazing job getting up to his elbows in creating this world and creating a look and a feel and the technology and the architecture of this city. A lot of credit is due to him for making it all hang together.”
