It’s learned that Bob Orci is eyeing the director’s chair for Star Trek 3, and that he is writing the script with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne; J.J. Abrams and David Ellison are on board as producers.

Variety also states that while Abrams agrees with the choice of Orci directing Star Trek 3, Paramount seems to be a bit hesitant as they are taking a “cautious” approach. Star Trek Into Darkness had about a $468 million worldwide gross in 2012, which was actually less than the 2009 Star Trek film domestically by about $30 million.

It’s also stated that long time collaborators Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are parting ways – at least regarding movies – as the two are pursuing separate projects. Reportedly, Orci and Kurtzman will still work together on television related projects.

Alex Kurtzman will be directing the Venom movie for Sony and is said to be working on a solo deal with Universal Studios to oversee new adaptations of The Mummy and Van Helsing.

The writing duo have worked on many projects together including Amazing Spider-Man 2, Star Trek, Transformers, Sleepy Hallow and Hawaii 5-0.
