Thor: Ragnarok: Tom Hiddleston Talks High Stakes & Hela

It’s been said on numerous occassions that Thor: Ragnarok is funny, with Tom Hiddleston even describing the third Thor movie as hilarious, which saw Samuel L. Jackson disagree with.

While a funny Thor movie doesn’t sound all that good, there will be some seriousness to it (but just how much remains to be seen).

Tom Hiddleston recently spoke about the high stakes of Thor: Ragnarok in an interview with Sirius XM and mentioned Cate Blanchett’s Hela, the goddess of death.

“Don’t worry. There are also some very high stakes. Cate Blanchett plays, Hela, the goddess of death. The clue is kind of in the title. She brings destruction in her wake. There is no other actress in the world who can do that as brilliantly as she can. So, yeah, Thor and Loki are up against it in a way. ‘The Ragnarok’ means the end of everything in Norse mythology. The end of time, space, and the universe. Hela is around. Put one-and-one equals two. That’s where I’ll leave you, you’ll have to wait and see.”

Likewise, director Taika Waititi downplayed the humor angle a bit while chatting with EW.com.

“I think sometimes people mistake a tonal shift as ‘We’re just going to make some ridiculous broad comedy where no one gives a s— what happens and everyone gets stoned and sits around talking about saving the universe,’ ” Waititi says. “We want people to care what happens and care that the hero succeeds. I think tonally it’s like a slight shift. I don’t feel nervous — I feel good about it.”

While, admittedly, I am a bit nervous that Thor: Ragnarok will turn out as something goofy, let’s hope my worries are unwarranted.

Thor: Raganarok has a November 3, 2017 release directed by Taika Waititi starring Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk/Banner, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster,  Anthony Hopkins as Odin and Sam Neill in an unknown role.
