Bad News: Thor Is Funniest In Thor: Ragnarok

It sounds as if Marvel is trying to repeat Guardians of the Galaxy by making Thor goofball sci-fi akin to Lost in Space.

I wasn’t a big fan of Thor in Avengers 2 as the character was basically comic relief, and now according to Tom Hiddleston, Thor and Chris Hemsworth will be even “funnier” in Thor: Ragnarok.

Here’s the blub, via Fandango:

At the end of The Dark World, Loki is on the throne. At the beginning of Ragnarok, Thor has a few questions, Loki is endearingly enigmatic about providing answers. Taika Waititi is such a spirited, hilarious individual, and he and Chris [Hemsworth] became very fast friends. What was great for me to see was to see their friendship kind of blossom, and they brought out the best in each other, and started making stuff up, and I can confidently say right now that this will be the funniest depiction of the character of Thor that you’ve ever seen. I personally have known for almost ten years that Chris Hemsworth is hilarious.

While hopefully it’s not all that bad, more evidence of Thor: Ragnarok having a goofball approach comes from the Thor: Ragnarok logo, which looks like a cheesy video game. Waititi even said a while back that Thor: Ragnarok is like “70s/80s sci-fi fantasy,” which is cheesy in itself (there’s a difference between “science-fiction” and “sci-fi fantasy”). Marvel also released the two-part “Team Thor” videos, which has Hemsworth and Thor coming off as a complete ass. I certainly hope during the gladiator arena battle with the Hulk that Thor isn’t making jokes–or even worse, singing and dancing. 

I happen to like my cosmic and science-fiction stories a bit more on the serious side, which is what inspired the Guardians of the Galaxy movie in the first place and even Thor: Ragnarok with “Planet Hulk.” Comics like Annihilation, the 2007 Nova series and the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy. If you are a comic book fan, just look at what Loeb and Bendis did to Marvel Cosmic–they frackin’ castrated it. 

Now I know fans will bring up the success of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which truth be told I’ve only been able to watch once. I’m not a huge fan of the movie as it took such a different take than the source material, and Gunn cut Nova from the script (Nova is a much better character than Star-Lord, IMO). I do get it why Marvel Studios and Gunn took the approach, which was an attempt to appeal to the lowest common denominator of fans. However, I would argue that Guardians of the Galaxy would have been much better off with a Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax that were more like their comic book counterparts. The general audience still had Rocket and Groot, which is the fan-favorites, and I don’t hear many fans gushing over Star-Lord, Gamora or Drax (I did love Karen Gillan’s Nebula).  

So if we get a wise-cracking Thor throughout all of Thor: Ragnarok, I hope it doesn’t come off as forced, similar to Avengers 2. The movie already has Loki, which is a character that provides some humor, just how much do we need?  Will Kevin Feige ever give us a serious Marvel movie? I suppose that’s why their villains always come off as boring and bland as well.
