Star Wars: The Force Awakens To Take Over IMAX For A Month

[page_title]

It’s reported Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be taking over IMAX theaters for four weeks.

THR reports JJ Abrams’ Star Wars will have the large screen IMAX format all to itself in North America and foreign markets when it debuts December 18th.

It’s noted the move for IMAX isn’t unheard of, but is a bit unusual, as the last time something similar occurred was four years go when the three Hobbit movies took over IMAX and were the only IMAX movies shown.

It’s expected that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will break the IMAX opening-weekend record, which is currently held by Jurassic World with $44.2 million, having recently passed Disney’s Iron Man 3 ($28.8 million).

In total, it’s expected that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will open in 700-800 IMAX locations worldwide, with around half in the U.S.

Star Wars: Episode VII is the ultimate crossover movie — it crosses over to everyone,” Imax Entertainment CEO Greg Foster  said in a statement, with it noted Abrams shot scenes for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in IMAX.

Regarding the competition, it’s mentioned the November releases of Sony’s James Bond Spectre and Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 will wind down their IMAX screenings by the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Warner Bros.’ In the Heart of the Sea, which opens December 11th, will get only one week in Imax.

It’s even suggested that Star Wars: The Force Awakens could dominate IMAX screenings past the initial four weeks.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has a December 18, 2015 release directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.
