James Cameron Says Guardians Is Irresponsible Science-Fiction

James Cameron is back at it, blasting superhero movies.

Following his words about Wonder Woman and the Avengers, now James Cameron offers his thoughts on James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

While promoting his new docuseries “AMC Visionaries: James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction,” James Cameron basically explains the difference between “sci-fi” and “science-fiction.”

“We can see the market drives us to a sort of science fiction now that’s either completely escapist and doesn’t require a technical consultant — an example of that would be ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ It’s just fun,” Cameron said (via IndieWire). “We don’t care how those spaceships work or any of that stuff works. And then you have scientifically responsible science fiction like ‘The Martian’ or ‘Interstellar.’”

Cameron is absolutely right in that not much thinking if required for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. We can also add in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, which falls on the “sci-fi” side of things and not “science-fiction.”

The Marvel comics were once upon a time “science-fiction,” but have now gone the soft “sci-fi” route.

I wonder if Marvel Studios will continue with their “sci-fi” stuff or if they will ever go with an intelligent “science-fiction” movie?
