Qizilbash continued, “Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project, and Aniplex is the perfect partner to translate Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game into a stunning new anime series.”

What is Ghost of Tsushima about?

Ghost of Tsushima is an action-adventure game developed by Sucker Punch Productions, released in 2020 for the PlayStation 4. Set in 13th-century Japan during the first Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island, the game follows the story of Jin Sakai, a samurai who must abandon his traditional code to save his homeland from devastation.

The story begins with the Mongols, led by the cunning Khotun Khan, launching a brutal attack on Tsushima, leaving Jin and the samurai forces devastated. With his uncle, Lord Shimura, captured and the island overrun, Jin realizes that conventional samurai tactics are insufficient to defeat the invaders. Forced to adapt, Jin embraces unorthodox methods of warfare, earning the title of “The Ghost.”

Players explore an open-world version of Tsushima Island, filled with forests, fields, serene shrines, and ancient temples. The game encourages free exploration, with activities such as side quests, collectibles, and cultural experiences like composing haikus, visiting hot springs, and honoring sacred landmarks.

Combat in Ghost of Tsushima offers two distinct styles. As a samurai, players engage in precise and honorable swordplay, utilizing stances and counters to defeat foes in direct combat. Alternatively, they can embrace stealth as the Ghost, using tactics like assassinations, distractions, and psychological warfare to dismantle the Mongol forces.
