‘Red One’ Beats Down ‘Road House’ To Become Prime Video’s Biggest Movie Opening

The new Christmas movie, Red One, directed by Jake Kasdan starring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, and J.K. Simmons gives Road House a beat down of its own.

You can read my review here, I give it a 9/10 for a Christmas movie.

Amazon Prime Video has announced that Red One was watched by 50 million worldwide viewers in its first four days, marking the biggest opening on the streaming service. The number passes Road House from earlier in the year directed by Doug Liman starring Jake Gyllenhaal which pulled 50 million global viewers over its first two weekends. A sequel is being developed for Road House.

“Given the audience response to Red One both in theaters and on Prime Video, the film will clearly be a perennial holiday favorite for years to come,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. “Every film is different, and we are so grateful for the partnership with our filmmakers in collectively finding the right strategy to get this film in front of the widest possible audience. With Red One, there was no doubt that strategy needed to include a theatrical release and associated marketing campaign, which drove audiences to theaters and generated awareness for the film with viewers who would ultimately tune in on Prime Video. It’s rewarding to see our plan pay off for customers, and we are incredibly thankful to the entire filmmaking team and cast who helped make it happen.”

REDONE

Red One was also released in theaters about a month before the streaming release and has brought in $175 million.

“Our little Christmas movie, RED ONE has finally come home to you and your fams around the world,” Johnson posted on Instagram three days ago. “Thanks for making us #1 at the box office last month and now we’re primed and set for a nice long Amazon run in your cribs.”

He added, “Enjoy the movie and HAPPY HOLIDAYS, my friends. And kindly leave cookies and tequila out for your boy on Christmas Eve… Dwanta Claus.”
