Alfonso Cuarón Rumored For New James Bond, Seemingly Confirms Talks

Alfonso Cuarón might back directing James Bond as following rumors, the director seemingly confirms talks with Amazon, the new owner in full control of the franchise.

The director behind Harry Potter, Children of Men, and Gravity was at one time up to direct a James Bond movie years ago but turned it down. Cuarón didn’t want to direct while the producer-team handled all the action.

Well, that’s exactly what was Amazon’s problem with James Bond, as the producers owned the creative rights and final say behind the franchise. That’s all changed now as Jeff Bezos and Amazon recently forked out another billion dollars to purchase the full rights to James Bond from longtime owners Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson. Now in charge of the James Bond franchise at Amazon is former Sony exec Amy Pascal and, interestingly enough, Harry Potter producer David Heyman.

What do the rumors say?

Regarding Alfonso Cuarón, a rumor surfaced recently from Jeff Sneider that Heyman has been eyeing Cuarón to direct the next James Bond movie. The rumor was then backed up by Puck News who said more of the same.

Alfonso Cuarón confirms talks

Now Alfonso Cuarón has seemingly confirmed the talks with Amazon. While Alfonso Cuarón didn’t specifically mention James Bond, what he says lines up with the recent rumors (translated via X):

“There is indeed THIS project under discussion, and I have the desire – if it happens – to revisit this story in my own way.”

Movies, TV, video games

Now that Amazon is in full control they are moving forward with their own version of 007.

A report recently said that Jeff Bezos sent out a company-wide memo stating their version will be both British and male. Rumors have said that previously Amazon was considering going woke with Bond. Interestingly, following Amazon purchasing the rights and the recent rumors, Amazon let go of Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, with it claimed she had been fired.

So a new movie is definitely moving forward. TV spinoffs on Prime Video seem likely, and recently saw the announcement that the James Bond origin story video game is back in development.

No actor has been announced as the new 007, but Henry Cavill is the big-time fan-favorite pick to take on the role, according to fans who responded to an online question from Bezos.
