Happy birthday, Superman! And that’s the new official title for Superman: Legacy as revealed by director and the co-head of the DCU, James Gunn, on social media who also offered a first look at the David Corenswet Man of Steel suit.
Regarding the February 29th birthday of Superman, while the Man of Steel did debut in Action Comics #1 on April 18, 1938, DC editors, with a tongue-in-cheek approach, explained in comic book letter columns that Superman’s perpetual youthfulness stemmed from his birth on Leap Day, February 29, occurring once every four years.
So in 1988, when DC celebrated Superman’s 50th anniversary, they embraced February 29 as the official birth date for the Man of Steel. This decision was even reflected in a TIME magazine cover-story in 1988 announcing to all of America that Superman’s birthday is indeed February 29.
Gunn overjoyed: now filming
“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” posted Gunn.
Gunn added, “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.”

The cast includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Superman, Rachel Brosnahan is playing Lois Lane; Isabela Merced is Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion is Green Lantern Guy Gardner; Edi Gathegi is playing Mister Terrific; María Gabriela de Faría is playing The Engineer; Anthony Carrigan is Metamorpho; Skyler Gisondo is Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio is Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, with Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Sean Gunn is also playing Maxwell Lord in the DCU, though it’s unconfirmed if he will be in Superman. Milly Alcock is also playing Supergirl rumored to first appear in Superman prior to her solo Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film.
