“On this day in 1938 the first superhero entered our atmosphere via the imaginations of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster,” posted Gunn on Twitter.

Gunn continued, “He gave us someone to believe in, not because of his great physical power, but because of his character and determination to do right no matter what.”

Gunn added, “Happy #Superman Day to all of you! #UpUpandAway.”

Superman debuted in the pages of Action Comics #1 on April 18, 1938 by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster.

What is James Gunn’s Superman about?

DC describes Gunn’s Superman as telling the story of the Man of Steel’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Superman is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe,” said James Gunn in the big DCU announcement. “Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world. I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”
