Zack Snyder Celebrates Dawn of the Dead Anniversary as March Again Becomes His Month

Zack Snyder is once again using March to look back on a major moment in his career, this time by posting about Dawn of the Dead, the movie that launched his feature-film career.

On Instagram, Snyder shared the poster and wrote, “On this day in 2004, we released my first feature film — a remake of Dawn of the Dead, inspired by George A. Romero’s legendary original. A beginning I’ll always be grateful for.”

Dawn of the Dead hit theaters on March 19, 2004, and was Snyder’s feature directorial debut.

March keeps meaning something for Zack Snyder

That post also fits a pattern fans have been watching closely.

March is Snyder’s birthday month, and it is also the month tied to some of his biggest releases and biggest fan moments.

Cosmic Book News recently noted that Snyder’s posts have leaned into March as a defining month for him, which is why every new throwback this month has gotten fans paying attention.

For Snyder fans, that matters because March is not just another page on the calendar. It is the month tied to Dawn of the Dead, Watchmen, Batman v Superman, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which recently celebrated its five year anniversary.

James Gunn is part of the Dawn of the Dead story too

What also stands out is that Dawn of the Dead connects Snyder directly to James Gunn.

Gunn wrote the screenplay for the 2004 movie, which Snyder himself highlighted back in December when he posted behind-the-scenes images and called it a “proud father moment” for Dawn of the Dead, adding that it was “written by the one and only @jamesgunn.”

Dawn of the Dead is credited as being directed by Snyder and written by Gunn, making it one of the earliest major links between the two DC filmmakers.

Worth noting is that in contrast to Snyder’s earlier Dawn of the Dead post, this latest anniversary post kept the focus on the movie’s release and Snyder’s own start as a feature filmmaker, where Snyder didn’t mention or tag Gunn.

Gunn previously praised Snyder publicly

Not tagging Gunn doesn’t mean there’s any beef, as it’s been said the pair are friends.

Last year, Gunn posted a photo with Snyder on Instagram and wrote, “Always a pleasure catching up with my friend Zack Snyder, consummate filmmaker (and a doubly consummate storyteller!).”

The post got a lot of attention at the time because it showed the two still publicly friendly despite Gunn taking over DC Studios.
