Disney has officially cast Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel in its live-action Tangled.
The studio revealed the news on social media with a video featuring Hahn holding up a Mother Gothel T-shirt while joking about her “outfit of the day.”
“You want her to be the bad guy? Fine,” the video teases before confirming Hahn will play the villain in the upcoming remake.
Hahn Teases The Role In Disney Video
In the clip, Hahn jokes with fans as she shows off the shirt featuring the Tangled villain.
“Hey, OOTD. I just found out what that stands for. So here’s my outfit of the day,” Hahn says. “Simple jeans, glasses, t-shirt. This is easy. You know, just another day.”
Mother Gothel is the manipulative woman who keeps Rapunzel locked in a tower so she can use the princess’ magical hair to stay young.
Teagan Croft And Milo Manheim Lead The Cast
Hahn joins a cast that already includes Teagan Croft (Titans) as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim (Disney’s Zombies franchise) as Flynn Rider, the thief who helps the princess escape the tower.
They take over the roles voiced in the animated movie by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi.
Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) is directing the film from a script draft by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Kristin Burr is producing for Burr! Productions with Lucy Kitada serving as executive producer.
Disney briefly paused development following the box office failure of the live-action Snow White in early 2025 but resumed work on Tangled last fall.

The Original Tangled
Released in 2010, the animated Tangled retold the classic Brothers Grimm Rapunzel fairy tale. The story follows a spirited princess with magical golden hair who escapes her tower for the first time and embarks on an adventure with a charming thief.
The film grossed more than $590 million worldwide and earned an Oscar nomination for the song “I See the Light.” Music for the movie was written by Disney legend Alan Menken with lyrics by Glenn Slater.
With Kathryn Hahn now locked in as Mother Gothel, Disney’s live-action Tangled continues to take shape.
