James Gunn’s Supergirl Drops Puppy Bowl Spot Titled ‘Home’

James Gunn’s Supergirl Drops Puppy Bowl Spot Titled 'Home'

A new Supergirl spot titled “Home” debuted during the Puppy Bowl, giving fans fresh footage from Supergirl, and leaning hard into a familiar James Gunn theme.

The spot opens on Krypton, showing Kara Zor-El with her parents before the planet’s destruction. The biggest reveal comes when Kara first meets Krypto, not as the super-powered dog fans know, but as a puppy.

From there, the footage shifts into shots pulled from the recent trailer. Watch below.

James Gunn Goes Back to the “Baby” Well

The Puppy Bowl spot highlights a creative pattern that’s become hard to miss in projects overseen by James Gunn.

Gunn has consistently leaned into “baby” or juvenile characters as emotional anchors:

  • Superman featured Baby Joey.
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy films made Baby Groot a central hook.
  • Now Supergirl introduces Krypto as a puppy during Kara’s earliest moments.

The formula is familiar: soften the audience early, establish innocence, then contrast it with loss and violence. The “Home” spot follows that exact playbook.

What the Spot Sets Up for Supergirl

According to DC Studios, Supergirl follows Kara Zor-El as she’s forced into an interstellar journey after a ruthless adversary strikes close to home. Reluctant and hardened by loss, Kara teams up with an unlikely companion in a mission driven by vengeance and justice.

The Puppy Bowl spot clearly positions Kara’s Krypton origin — and Krypto — as the emotional foundation for that arc.

Cast and Creative Team

Milly Alcock stars in the dual role of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El. She’s joined by Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa.

The film is directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, with Peter Safran and Gunn producing.

Behind the camera, the creative team includes cinematographer Rob Hardy, production designer Neil Lamont, editor Tatiana S. Riegel, costume designer Anna B. Sheppard, VFX supervisor Geoffrey Baumann, and composer Ramin Djawadi.

Release Date

Supergirl opens in theaters and IMAX across North America on June 26, 2026, with international releases beginning June 24, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The Puppy Bowl may be about cute dogs, but the message is clear: Gunn is once again betting that a “baby” moment will hook audiences before the universe comes crashing down.
