James Gunn Shoots Down Batman Rumors: ‘Same Exact Script From the Beginning’

James Gunn has shut down new rumors surrounding Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, calling the claims flat-out wrong.

The DC Studios co-head responded directly to speculation circulating online from a fan that Reeves originally planned a “realistic” Clayface for the sequel, but was forced to change villains after Gunn introduced Clayface in Creature Commandos.

The rumor also claimed this alleged shift caused delays in writing the script.

Gunn dismissed it outright.

James Gunn Responds on Threads

Replying to a fan on Threads, Gunn appeared baffled by where the rumor even came from.

“What? 😂 Where does this stuff come from? No it’s the same exact script it has been from the beginning,” Gunn wrote.

That response directly contradicts claims that Reeves had to scrap or rework his plans due to DCU overlap.

Gunn even later responded he only heard the rumor from the one fan.

No Clayface Conflict Between DCU and Reeves’ Batman

The speculation suggested that Reeves was told to abandon Clayface because the character debuted in the animated Creature Commandos series, which is part of Gunn’s DCU continuity. According to Gunn, that never happened.

The Batman Part II remains part of Reeves’ standalone universe, separate from the DCU, and Gunn’s comment reinforces that Reeves has maintained creative control over his story from the start.
