James Gunn’s Shoots Down Forbes’ Supergirl Budget Claims

James Gunn's Shoots Down Forbes' Supergirl Budget Claims

Well, look at that — Forbes got something wrong? Shocking, I know.

Forbes Claims a $200 Million Budget

A new Forbes Australia profile on Milly Alcock claims the Supergirl movie has a $200 million budget. If that were true, the break-even point would land around $500 million. Because Alcock is Australian — and director Craig Gillespie is Australian — the article reads as if the writer has inside knowledge.

The problem? It appears that Forbes lets almost anyone write for the site, and a lot of their “reporting” is opinion dressed up as industry expertise.

Supergirl Reshoots Add David Corenswet’s Superman, Possibly More Lobo

James Gunn Shoots It Down

Forbes wrote:

That mix of naivety and composure has defined her rise to success. In just five years, Alcock has gone from inner-west Sydney to global recognition in House of The Dragon, and soon, a superhero suit. Her name now sits beside the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow logo, a $200 million DC feature directed by fellow Australian Craig Gillespie.

A fan immediately ran to Gunn on Threads to confirm it. Gunn replied:

“Not even a little bit true.”

So, apparently, the claim is false. Whether the real number is higher or lower isn’t clear, but Gunn wouldn’t correct it unless it was way off. And yes, it’s worth noting Gunn also denied early Superman budget reports that multiple outlets — including Forbes — stated the final number ended up closer to $350 million.

Superman’s Profit Debate Still Matters

There has also been the question if Gunn’s Superman was a financial success.

As I recently went over, I think the answer to that is loud and clear: the same studio is dating the Minecraft sequel only two weeks after Man of Tomorrow.

Can Supergirl Break the Streak?

Hollywood hasn’t had a successful female superhero movie since Zack Snyder’s Wonder Woman. Gunn’s Superman didn’t land internationally, and Supergirl appears to carry the same comedic and goofy tone as Gunn’s DCU projects.

The only thing that might save the movie is Jason Momoa’s Lobo, who saw big success with the first Aquaman, but the sequel mega-bombed. We’ve been told that they liked Momoa as Lobo so much that they added more of Lobo into the flick. There is also a rumor that says they added David Corenswet as Superman.

Whether that’s enough to lift Supergirl is another question entirely.

Release Info

Supergirl hits theaters on June 26, 2026, directed by Craig Gillespie. The DCU will also be promoting the film at CCXP this weekend.
