Frank Grillo confirmed he’s returning as Rick Flag Sr. in Man of Tomorrow, James Gunn’s sequel to Superman.
In a new interview with THR, Grillo said his character is “a big part of the sequel’s story,” which tells you Gunn plans to pull directly from the events set up at the end of Peacemaker Season 2.
“My character, Rick Flag Sr., is a big part of the sequel’s story, so I’m excited about it,” he said.

How Peacemaker Sets Up Rick Flag Sr.’s Role
In the Season 2 finale, Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. used Peacemaker’s alien device that can open dimensions to create a metahuman prison, and Cena’s Peacemaker ended up trapped on the other side. The finale also hinted that the device’s multiversal fallout isn’t finished, leaving Gunn plenty of room to connect Peacemaker directly to Man of Tomorrow.
With Grillo saying Flag Sr. is central to the sequel, it now looks like the alien tech becomes a major plot driver in the film. That also lines up with Gunn pushing the DCU toward bigger cosmic elements.

Superman, Lex Luthor, and a Bigger Threat
Man of Tomorrow is expected to follow David Corenswet’s Superman as he teams with Nicolas Hoult’s Lex Luthor against a larger threat.
Fans originally speculated Brainiac, but based on recent hints, another candidate makes more sense, as we recently went over: The Centre.

Why The Centre Fits the Sequel
We recently broke down why The Centre lines up with Gunn’s direction. The creature ties into metahuman mythology and brings catastrophic power on a scale that can drive a full-blown DCU crisis—matching the kind of fallout teased in Peacemaker.
Gunn’s take on the DCU has already split fans, and choosing The Centre over a more traditional villain like Brainiac would match his divisive approach.
Update: It’s reported that Brainiac is actually the villain.
