New 'Conjuring' Prequel Moving Forward After Record 'Last Rites' Box Office

The Conjuring franchise keeps going after The Conjuring: Last Rites broke records with $487 million globally.

A new prequel film is now in development at Warner Bros. and New Line. This next entry will focus on the early years of Ed and Lorraine Warren, setting up a fresh timeline as The Conjuring continues to grow.

Short film director Rodrigue Huart is in talks to direct. Writers Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who worked on the previous Conjuring films and The Nun II, are back for the script.

Cast Questions After Last Rites

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson may not return. Last Rites closed out the Warren family storyline, and the prequel direction means younger actors are likely to take over. This move keeps The Conjuring alive while shifting to a new era.

The Conjuring Heads to HBO

As previously announced, The Conjuring will also expand to television.

HBO is developing a connected series set in the same universe. Nancy Won recently joined as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Story details are under wraps for now.

Record-Setting Horror Universe

With nine films — including Annabelle and The Nun spinoffs — The Conjuring has earned $2.7 billion worldwide. The films have stayed profitable because they cost less to produce than most major studio releases. James Wan created the franchise, and Peter Safran continues to produce every movie.
