'Nightmare on Elm Street' Director Wants Jim Carrey as Freddy Krueger

Jim Carrey might have what it takes to bring Freddy Krueger back from the dead, at least according to A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors director Chuck Russell.

During an interview on Dread Central’s Development Hell podcast, Russell said he believes Carrey could reinvent the horror icon if the franchise takes a creative leap forward.

Jim Carrey as Freddy Krueger?

Russell, who directed Carrey in The Mask (1994), praised the actor’s range and intensity, suggesting that his comedic background and ability to play darker roles could make for an interesting new take on Freddy Krueger.

“Jim, in my opinion, could almost do anything if he put his heart into it,” Russell said. “For Jim to do it, we’d have to do something that was another leap in the Elm Street series — a little bit like what Wes did with his very meta New Nightmare. I think Jim would only consider it, and I’d only consider harnessing Jim, if there was a bold new direction for Elm Street.”

Russell said he’d “love to do another Elm Street if there was the full support of everybody,” and even mentioned that Patricia Arquette, who starred as Kristen Parker in Dream Warriors, has expressed interest in returning.

Robert Englund Has Retired the Claws

Robert Englund, who originated Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven’s 1984 classic, officially retired from the role. In 2023, he told Variety that age and injuries have caught up with him, saying, “I just can’t do fight scenes for more than one take anymore. I’ve got a bad neck and bad back and arthritis in my right wrist.”

Englund, however, remains open to a cameo if the franchise returns, and even suggested Kevin Bacon “would be interesting” in the role, noting his respect for the horror genre.

The Future of Nightmare on Elm Street

The last time Freddy appeared on screen was in Freddy vs. Jason (2003), followed by Jackie Earle Haley’s short-lived reboot in 2010. Since then, A Nightmare on Elm Street has remained dormant, though New Line has long been rumored to be developing another entry.

If Chuck Russell has his way, Jim Carrey could be part of a fresh vision for the series — one that pays tribute to its roots while pushing Freddy Krueger into new territory.

Carrey’s name has also surfaced as a potential choice for George Jetson in the live-action The Jetsons movie.
