The project would mark another major studio collaboration for Jim Carrey, who’s enjoyed renewed success through the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Carrey’s turn as Dr. Ivo Robotnik helped those films earn over $1.2 billion worldwide. He’s set to return in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, this time as Gerald Robotnik.

While no casting has been confirmed, industry chatter suggests Carrey could play George Jetson, the futuristic everyman at the center of the classic sitcom. Trevorrow and writer Joe Epstein are reportedly developing the script.

Bringing ‘The Jetsons’ Into the Future

The original Jetsons animated series aired on ABC from 1962 to 1963 and returned in the mid-1980s for two additional seasons. Set in a high-tech future filled with flying cars, robot maids, and moving sidewalks, the series followed George Jetson, his wife Jane, their teenage daughter Judy, and young son Elroy. The family’s loyal robot housekeeper Rosie became a pop-culture icon.

A 1990 animated film adaptation grossed just over $20 million domestically. Warner Bros. has long explored ways to revive Hanna-Barbera properties, with mixed results.

Warner Bros. Revisits Hanna-Barbera Classics

The studio found success with its live-action Scooby-Doo movies in the early 2000s. Directed by Raja Gosnell and written by James Gunn, the two films earned nearly $500 million combined and featured a cast led by Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini.

Warner Bros. is hoping The Jetsons can capture a similar balance of nostalgia and mainstream appeal for today’s audiences.

DC Comics’ take on The Jetsons

Back in 2018, DC Comics reimagined The Jetsons through a six-issue series written by Jimmy Palmiotti. The story gave the classic cartoon a darker and more grounded twist, focusing on family and technology in a modernized future.

In this version, George Jetson is an everyman trying to adapt to a hyper-digital world while his wife Jane works as an off-world scientist. Their daughter Judy is a socialite searching for purpose, and son Elroy experiments with robotics in ways that push boundaries. The biggest change came from George’s mother, who downloaded her consciousness into Rosie the robot, turning the family’s loyal maid into something far more personal and emotional.

DC’s Jetsons blended satire, sci-fi, and family drama, a far cry from the lighthearted tone of the 1960s animated series.
