The animated hit KPop Demon Hunters is one step closer to a sequel. Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix are in talks to continue the story, following the film’s record-breaking success on the platform and at the box office.
Netflix’s Biggest Animated Film Ever
Since premiering in June, KPop Demon Hunters has become Netflix’s most-watched English-language film of all time with more than 236 million views, surpassing Red Notice. The movie also broke out theatrically during its sing-along screenings in late August, opening at No. 1 with an estimated $19.2 million — a first for Netflix.
The film’s staying power has been just as remarkable. Kids and families continue to rewatch the movie multiple times, fueling streaming numbers and driving demand for a follow-up. Its soundtrack has also set records, becoming the first to land four songs in the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 10 at once, led by Huntr/x’s “Golden.”
The Sony–Netflix Deal
Sony originally struck a pact with Netflix in 2021, during the pandemic, to cover the movie’s full $100 million budget plus an additional $25 million fee. The deal gave Netflix full streaming rights while Sony kept a cut of soundtrack sales and publishing revenue. Merchandise, however, belongs solely to Netflix.
While some insiders, via the trades, argue Sony gave up too much by not taking the movie theatrical on its own, the arrangement turned into a financial win. Sony could be looking at profit margins as high as 20–30 percent, well above the industry average.
The partnership between the two companies has been smooth, in part due to shared history: Netflix animation chief Hannah Minghella previously worked at Sony alongside current Sony Animation head Kristine Belson.
Creative Team and Next Steps
Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who co-wrote the first film, are expected to be part of any sequel. Both have spoken openly about the potential for continuing the story of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey as they balance superstardom with demon hunting.
Talks are still at an early stage. Netflix and Sony must first finalize their deal before production details can move forward. Neither side can move ahead on its own, making the partnership essential.
