Reps Deny Henry Cavill’s Superman Almost Got the Michael Bay Treatment

Henry Cavill’s Superman Almost Got the Michael Bay Treatment

This is pretty funny, assuming it’s true, but it’s claimed that the Henry Cavill Superman reboot that nearly happened after Black Adam was eyeing Michael Bay to direct.

Tuesday, June 3rd update: As I suspected, a spokesperson for WB has contacted us and denies the claim.

Previous from June 2:

So after everyone complained about all the explosions and violence in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, the next Superman movie starring Henry Cavill would be directed by Michael Bay with even more explosions and violence?

Worth a mention is the claim is in stark contrast to what was said about Henry Cavill and Christopher McQuarrie’s approach to Man of Steel 2, which was said to be a more hopeful approach than what Snyder did with the character. I suppose you can still be hopeful and have lots of explosions. Bay was also a classmate and went to the same film school as Snyder.

What is said about the Henry Cavill Superman movie?

So right around when Black Adam was released, recall how they included Cavill back as Superman in the post-credit scene. They also announced a new Superman movie was in development, and Henry even did that big interview stating he was back as the Man of Stel. Well, it all went bust, which I was told was because of WBD CEO David Zaslav (not Gunn).

The new info comes via The Wrap about how WB film heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy wanted Henry Cavill back as Superman (just as I was told), where the site says sources filled them in Michael Bay was being looked at to direct:

Before Gunn and Safran’s hiring, Warner Bros. Pictures chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy briefly tried to get a standalone Henry Cavill-led “Superman” film going in 2022, with Michael Bay eyed to possibly direct, according to two insiders.

Why Michael Bay’s Superman Didn’t Happen — And What We Got Instead

Obviously, we now know that never happened. Michael Bay was also coming off Transformers: The Last Knight, which bombed, and his Netflix movie 6 Underground starring Ryan Reynolds went nowhere. It seems hard to believe they would bring Michael Bay on board for a Henry Cavill Superman movie. Of course, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t talked about.

Regarding the Cavill and McQuarrie pitch, McQuarrie recently teased details, offering that it would have been epic, along with their ideas for Green Lantern.

So long story short, from what I have been told, Zaslav went with Gunn and demanded that Gunn reboot DC with cheaper talent.

Gunn’s Superman flies into theaters on July 11th and spearheads the new DCU.
