Voltron Wraps Filming: Teases Cosmic Theme, Emperor Zarkon

Voltron Wraps Filming: Teases Cosmic Theme, Emperor Zarkon

The live-action Voltron movie has apparently wrapped filming in Australia, and with it comes our first tease at the film’s cosmic theme, which is something that is a big part of the original animated cartoon.

The identity of the actor possibly playing Emperor Zarkon may also have become known.

Wrap party teases cosmic setting

A crew member shared a photo from the official wrap party about eleven days ago on Instagram, which features a Voltron-themed backdrop with planets, galaxies, and asteroids, hinting at the film’s cosmic and intergalactic setting. In the animated shows, the Voltron Force is in charge of protecting the planet Arus, ruled by Princess Allura, from the evil King Zarkon.

The movie, directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, now looks to have moved into post-production.

Cast reveals “Galran Emperor”

While the cast has been announced, their roles remain under wraps. It’s thought the younger actors will be piloting the Lions, while the veterans take on supporting or leadership roles.

The cast includes Henry Cavill (spotted in Australia with his family), Rita Ora (who may be playing Haggar the Witch), Sterling K. Brown, Alba Baptista (recently seen on set with husband Chris Evans), Daniel Quinn-Toye, Samson Kayo, John Kim, Tharanya Tharan, Laura Gordon, and Tim Griffin.

IMDb also confirms actors playing Galrans, with Italian actor Roberto Zenca listed as the “Galran Emperor.” In the mythos, the Galran Emperor is Emperor Zarkon, the ruthless ruler of the Galra Empire and the main antagonist in the original Voltron series. Matthew Scully is also listed as playing a “Galran Officer.”

Reimagined Voltron for the live-action world

Plot details are still being kept secret, but director Rawson Marshall Thurber previously teased that the movie is a reimagining of Voltron for the live-action world. It will introduce a brand-new generation of pilots, with Thurber hinting the flick will stay true to the core elements of the beloved 1980s series:

“You know, I loved Voltron since I was a boy, and I wanted to make this movie since I was eight years old,” Thurber said. “To finally bring Voltron to life is beyond thrilling. We’ve reimagined Voltron for the live-action world but we’re going to stay true to the heart and the spirit of Voltron and those iconic elements that you love — that I love.”

He added:

“It’s taken us forty years to get here, but I promise you it will be worth the wait.”

Early production notes from Thurber also revealed several key locations designed for the film, including the “Common Room,” the “War Room,” the “Hall of Heroes,” and, of course, the Lions themselves.
