Amazon Slashes Russos’ ‘Citadel’ Plans After Jennifer Salke Exit

Amazon Slashes Russos’ ‘Citadel’ Plans After Jennifer Salke Exit

A couple of weeks ago, I went over how the Russos are taking heat in regards to the recent exit of Amazon executive Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. The trades have actually reported that Salke has been fired over her handling of James Bond, with it added that she was also behind the Russo Brothers’ bomb of a series, Citadel, which cost upwards of $300 million.

At the time it was reported that the Citadel spinoffs were up in the air, but now it’s learned two of them have been canceled and that additional plans for spinoffs have been put on hold.

At the same time, rumors have said that Kevin Feige is worried about the Russo Brothers’ handling of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, which the cancellations of the Citadel spinoffs only fuel.

Amazon Shifts Focus To Citadel Season 2

We get word about Amazon officially cutting back on the Russos’ Citadel universe via Deadline. Following the exit of former Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke, the streamer has canceled the international spinoffs Citadel: Diana and Citadel: Honey Bunny.

Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios, confirmed the cancellations:

“Having successfully traversed India and Italy, storylines from both Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana will be woven into the upcoming second season of the mothership series Citadel. While these successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series, Season 2 of Citadel will be our most exhilarating yet. With high-stakes storytelling, new additions to our amazing cast and bold, cinematic ambition, the new season will deepen the emotional journeys of Nadia, Mason and Orlick against the relentless force that is Manticore. We’re excited to share what’s next when Citadel Season 2 premieres globally in Q2 of 2026.”

While Deadline notes that both shows performed well in their local regions (India and Italy, respectively), neither became a global hit.

It’s now reported that only the main series is moving forward at Amazon, with Season 2 set to premiere globally in Q2 of 2026.

It’s added the plans for additional spinoffs, including one set in Mexico, have also been shelved as Amazon shifts full focus to completing Citadel Season 2.

What is the Kevin Feige rumor?

The rumor about Kevin Feige being worried about the Russos handling Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars is said to be about their new Netflix movie, The Electric State, bombing on the streaming service.

The Electric State reportedly had a $275 million budget, but didn’t perform all that well on Netflix. Likewise, Citadel has a huge budget and is basically a flop on Amazon.

The rumor says that Feige is now so concerned with the Russo brothers directing Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars – both with massive budgets – that Feige has decided to step in to closely oversee the process, including the script, to ensure the films turn out as strong as possible.
