Hasbro reinventing Power Rangers

Hasbro tried reinventing Power Rangers on the big screen in 2017 but the flick only made $142 million on a budget of around $100 million.

A live-action series was also in development at Netflix which was canceled and described as woke. It was reported that Hasbro has been exploring a new creative direction for the series with a new partner, which now appears to be Disney.

History

Power Rangers originally debuted in 1993 with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a Western adaptation of the Japanese Super Sentai series. The show exploded in popularity thanks to its mix of martial arts, giant robots, and colorful costumes — and quickly became a ’90s pop culture phenomenon.

The franchise has seen nearly 30 different seasons and spin-offs over the decades, jumping between networks like Fox Kids, ABC, Nickelodeon, and Netflix. Ownership has changed hands a few times too, with Saban Brands selling the rights to Hasbro in 2018.

While the brand has mostly targeted kids, it’s maintained a strong adult fanbase — especially those who grew up with the original series.
