James Gunn’s Superman trailer will likely be released by Christmas, according to the latest reports, which seems like the best guess, as we’ll go over.
The Superman trailer is arguably the most anticipated CBM promo to release in years. Aside from Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine, comic book movie content has suffered since the release of Avengers: Endgame. Gunn’s own Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is pretty good, and I liked Matt Reeves’ take on The Batman, though some fans differ on the Robert Pattinson take on the Dark Knight.
Gunn’s Superman is big as it ushers in a new era of DC movies. Out the door is the Zack Snyder DCEU Justice League universe. My insiders said it was at the demand of Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav. Henry Cavill is no longer the Man of Steel, and the Tyler Hoechlin Superman & Lois series is also ending (exactly as my insiders said). David Corenswet is taking over the reins. My insider said Gunn’s Superman is solid, and worth a mention is that they are big Snyder supporters. There’s no bad blood between Gunn and Snyder, and I’m told they’re friends.
When will the Superman trailer be released? Best guess is by Christmas
No CCXP
Initially I had thought Brazil’s huge CCXP convention would have been the best time to release the Superman trailer. James Gunn could have hosted a panel like he did with Creature Commandos at October’s NYCC. Gunn could have heavily promoted the release of the movie, introduced the cast to the world, and released the Superman trailer.
However, Gunn has said he is too busy for the CCXP, which takes place Dec. 5-8. Gunn also confirmed DCU co-head Peter Safran won’t be at CCXP. It seems highly doubtful without a DC presence that the Superman trailer will be released at CCXP.
What about with with The Lord of the Rings anime?
Warner Bros. does have the The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim anime getting released on Dec. 13. What better way to promote the flick than release a new highly anticipated trailer that will play with it in theaters? However, it seems doubtful.
Box office tracking for the The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is in the low teens, like around $15 million. Likely, releasing the Superman trailer with the anime won’t do much to move the needle. We can also argue those fans that are going to see The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim are more the diehard type of fans that would go see Superman.
What you want is to get the Superman trailer in front of as many eyeballs as you can. Really, what you want is to get the Superman trailer watched by the normies.
Superman trailer release likely with Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King
So if you want to get the Superman trailer watched by as many people possible, especially the normies who of course know who Superman is, but likely don’t follow all the news as close as we do, you probably want to release the Superman trailer with the release of Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King on December 20, 2024, the weekend before Christmas.
I believe it may have been Collider who suggested the Superman trailer will be released by Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, but when you think about it, it’s a no-brainer.
Again, no James Gunn for CCXP, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim seems to be shaping up to be something for a really small niche audience, but Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King? It’s claimed early ticket sales are already through the roof. It’s actually claimed that Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King could hit a billion dollars.
Based off the first 12 hours of sales for #Mufasa, you can lock in another $1b+ film for @DisneyStudios . I also hear screenings have gone very well. What a comeback year for Disney. pic.twitter.com/o3CFCJT94S

Superman vs Deadpool
More evidence we may have a Superman trailer released by Christmas is that Marvel seems to have noticed.
When it comes to DC, Feige can’t help himself but to take on the direct competition. It’s known Feige changed the plans for Captain America 3 due to Snyder going with Batman vs. Superman. It’s guessed Feige went the Multiverse route with No Way Home because The Flash movie is also about the Multiverse. Want more? Fantastic Four gets released on July 25, 2025, two week’s after Gunn’s new Man of Steel flies into theaters.
Well, guess what else Feige apparently has planned? Some sort of Deadpool Christmas Special. Ryan Reynolds has been teasing a Deadpool Christmas Special on social media. Obviously that is going to drop right around Christmas, which again, is the best guess when the Superman trailer is going to be released with Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King. Kevin Feige couldn’t let James Gunn have all the spotlight.
What are you most looking forward to in the Superman trailer? Me? I’m actually looking forward to hearing Gunn and composer John Murphy’s take on the music score. The John Williams score is iconic, and the Hans Zimmer Man of Steel score is also fantastic.
Superman gets released on July 11, 2025 also starring Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
