Friendship Shapes the Story

A Fresh Perspective on Star Wars

The creators explained that Skeleton Crew brings a new viewpoint to the Star Wars franchise. The story unfolds through the eyes of young characters, offering something for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

“It’s fun to be able to make something that works if you don’t know anything about Star Wars and also works if you know everything about Star Wars,” said Watts.

The series avoids targeting children specifically despite its young protagonists. As Watts put it, “You’d make four 10-year-old kids your main characters, but it’s not a kids show. It’s not a kids film. You’re still making the stakes really real.”

Inspiration and Tone

The show draws inspiration from 1920s and 1930s pirate serials and the “Amblin wonder” vibe of classic adventure films.

“As a kid, you want to go on an adventure,” said Watts, explaining the timeless appeal.

They also explored the complex dynamics between adults and children, referencing Goonies as an example of how kids perceive the adult world.

Jude Law and the Cast

Jude Law plays a central role in the series, both on and off-screen. He worked closely with the child actors, helping them stay focused and engaged.

“Having Jude on set is like…he was just, like, in addition to being, like, an incredible actor and wonderful man, like, he also just helped us so much with the kids,” explained Watts.

The young cast brought excitement to the production, adding energy to the set.

“Every day on set is like, the greatest day in the world because they’re so amazed at every single thing that’s going on,” said Watts.

Design Choices

The show’s design incorporates a playful approach to the Star Wars aesthetic. From kid-inspired speeder bikes to creative set elements, the team embraced fun and originality.

“Are there tassels in space?” Watts recalled asking Dave Filoni, with co-showrunner Chris Ford replying, “Well there are now.”
