It’s unfortunately learned that both James Gunn and Peter Safran won’t be at the upcoming CCXP in Brazil in December, which sounds like it also means the highly anticipated Superman trailer won’t be released at the convention. It might also mean the DCU will skip out on the CCXP entirely.
While not confirmed, it was thought the CCXP – with its hundreds of thousands of attendees and massive coverage around the world – would be the perfect opportunity for Gunn to debut and showcase the DCU and the Superman trailer along with the new Man of Steel, David Corenswet, and the additional cast which includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
Afterall, Gunn recently attended the New York Comic-Con in October for the Creature Commandos animated series and brought the cast with him along with a new trailer. It also seems as if the Superman trailer is ready and locked and loaded to be released.
Gunn too busy for CCXP
However, when asked about the CCXP by a fan on Threads, Gunn said he is too busy to attend.
“Sadly, no, I tried to work it out but because of a million schedule conflicts I won’t be able to make it to CCXP this year, one of my favorite places in in the world with some of my favorite people,” said Gunn.
No Peter Safran for CCXP
With James Gunn not attending the CCXP, some fans thought that meant DCU co-head Peter Safran would show up and showcase the DCU, much how Marvel’s Kevin Feige has done for the MCU at many conventions.
When asked, Gunn said Safran won’t be at the CCXP, as well.
“No he sadly can’t either,” replied Gunn.
What does no CCXP mean for the Superman trailer release?
While both James Gunn and Peter Safran won’t be attending the CCXP, that doesn’t necessarily mean no DCU.
Gunn could very well release a video message to the hundreds of thousands of fans in attendance. However, will Gunn release the Superman trailer without any hoopla at CCXP? Seems doubtful.
CCXP seemed like a great opportunity
The CCXP takes place Dec 5, 2024 – Sun, Dec 8, 2024. Worth a mention is that Warner Bros. also has The Lord of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim anime coming out on December 13.
You would think releasing the Superman trailer at the CCXP would be the right time, as then fans could go watch the trailer in movie theaters with the The Lord of the Rings anime. Maybe that is up in the air, too.
Superman trailer release needs a big event
Honestly, I expected a huge event for the Superman trailer release, something on par with what Gunn recently did with Creature Commandos at NYCC. I think it’s a mistake to simply drop the trailer without much hype (I don’t know if that is the case).
“I’m too busy for CCXP” but “not for NYCC” doesn’t cut it, IMO.
Will the Superman trailer be released during the Super Bowl?
I also don’t expect the Superman trailer to be released during the Super Bowl in February. Warner Bros. is known for being frugal when it comes to spending on the Super Bowl and rarely if ever releases trailers during the Super Bowl (Dwayne Johnson did get a Black Adam Super Bowl trailer along with a DCEU promo two days before, though).
That said, Gunn and Marvel did release the Guardians of the Galaxy 3 trailer during the Super Bowl, so who knows? Maybe with Superman Josh Allen playing in The Big Game (wink), Gunn will release the Superman trailer at the Super Bowl.
San Diego Comic-Con takes place after Superman release
This year’s San Diego Comic-Con also takes place after the release of Superman, so exactly when is Gunn going to debut the cast? He also skipped out on it last year.
I’ll be disappointed if it’s at CinemaCon 2025 in March because that means no fans will be in attendance. Maybe Gunn has plans to do their own DCU event? DC FanDome was a big hit but they haven’t done one in years.
Superman gets released on July 11, 2025.
