It’s not looking good for Dwayne Johnson’s Christmas Santa-heist movie, Red One, which also stars Chris Evans, J.K. Simmons, and Lucy Liu.
The flick opened this weekend, but it’s currently bombing big-time at the box office.
On a reported massive budget of $250 million, estimates for the opening weekend offer Red One will only open to $30-$33 million.
The movie was originally set for an Amazon Prime streaming release but they switched gears and released it theatrically.
Fans like Red One
Red One does have good fan reviews, so maybe word of mouth will get out and save the film.
On Rotten Tomatoes, fans have given Red One an 88% fan score (critics a 33% score but they never give Dwayne Johnson movies good reviews) and the flick has an “A-” CinemaScore.
However, good scores don’t equate to success, as recently, the Transformers One animated movie bombed and has even better scores. You can rate and review Red One on our new fan site Stinky Garbage where your reviews count.
There are already comparisons to Black Adam, which is considered a bomb, but Black Adam performed opening at a much better $67M which finished with nearly $400 million.
Did fans stay home on Friday night?
Maybe the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight is to blame? Did fans stay home Friday night to watch the fight? If so, you would expect a big Saturday turn around for Red One. Guess we’ll have to wait until the actuals come in later this weekend.
Red One could also benefit from being the only Christmas movie getting released this year in theaters.
Upcoming films include Gladiator II and Wicked next week; so it will be interesting to see how well those do for comparison. A week after is the Moana 2 animated movie, which sees The Rock return as Maui.
There is nothing much until Kraven gets released on Dec. 13 along with The Lord of the Rings anime. The following week, a few days before Christmas, Mufasa: The Lion King gets released along with Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Expect marketing to ramp up for those flicks.
