James Gunn Says Not All DC Projects Guaranteed: 'We'll never put a half-assed script into production'

James Gunn takes to social media to clarify earlier comments about the DCU, this time stating all the DC projects that have been announced aren’t guaranteed to happen.

IGN erroneously published an article stating, “James Gunn assures every announced DCU project is still coming despite lack of updates.”

Gunn caught wind of the article and replied, “Just to clarify, I said everything we originally announced still in development not that it’s still coming. That all depends on the scripts! We’ll never put a half-assed script into production just because it was announced.”

Superman, Creature Commandos, Lanterns, Supergirl are definites

Recently saw Gunn confirm that only Lanterns and Supergirl is currently in pre-production, and of course Creature Commandos gets released in December and his Superman movie starring David Corenswet next July.

A fan also questioned Gunn about his remarks: “I don’t mean to sound daft, but why ‘announce’ if you don’t have viable scripts?”

Gunn replied, “Because they would all get out there with or without us announcing (as projects since have), so we simply announced the projects we were putting in development.”

Swamp Thing still in development

Also first announced at the big DCU event back in January of 2023 includes a Swamp Thing movie which is being developed by James Mangold. A fan stated to Gunn that Swamp Thing got canceled, to which Gunn replied, “No. What made you think that?” However, per Gunn’s words above, Swamp Thing being in development doesn’t mean it’s happening, it all depends on the script. Just like the following.

The DCU announcement also saw films announcements for The Authority, and The Brave and the Bold, which Andy Muschietti is supposed to be directing.

Additional announcements for TV include the live-action Waller series, Booster Gold, and the Wonder Woman related series, Paradise Lost.
