Ryan Gosling’s ‘The Fall Guy’ Box Office Crashes

The Fall Guy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt is underperforming at the box office and will likely need word of mouth to pick things up.

Some box office estimates were as high as $40 million with the low side said to be $30 million, but the flick looks to be bringing in only $28 million for its opening weekend.

Sunday update: Weekend box office is said to be $28.5M; foreign gross is at $36,903,000; worldwide is at $65,403,000.

Monday update: Actuals are less as Deadline reports Saturday didn’t do all that well, so the opening is only $27.7M; worldwide gross is at $64.4M.

5/21 Update: After being in theaters for 17 days, The Fall Guy is now available through home video with an extended cut version. The worldwide box office is at $127 million (reported budget $140M+).

The Fall Guy Rotten Tomatoes Score

The Fall Guy has an A- CinemaScore, which is good, and the Rotten Tomatoes scores aren’t too bad (83% from critics; 86% from fans), but there just doesn’t seem to be a lot of hype surrounding this movie.

The movie is actually based on the television series of the same name from ’80s, which starred Lee Majors, Douglas Barr, and Heather Thomas, but the film seems to be a goofier take (I mean, Gosling and Mikey Day appeared as Beavis and Butthead at the premiere — why?) .

To boot, The Fall Guy cost something around $150 million or more to make, so this is starting to look like a bust.

Aside from Beavis and Butthead, the marketing was decent, especially where they featured stuntmen from the movie doing action sequences which is cool, but I think they hoped to follow up on Gosling’s Barbie success, but that doesn’t look to be happening here. Also, how many people went to the premiere or watched it?

I’ve heard mixed reactions about the flick on social media, with one going so far as to offer The Fall Guy is a big disappointment.
