Summary

  • The live-action Bambi movie may be canceled, following Disney’s trend of uncertain success with live-action remakes
  • The departure of the President of Walt Disney Motion Picture Studios, who oversaw the remakes, may also contribute to the potential cancellation
  • The Bambi remake has lost its director

The live-action Bambi movie could be one of those canceled projects mentioned by Disney CEO Bob Iger.

The possibility also follows the news of the recent departure of the President Of Walt Disney Motion Picture Studios, Sean Bailey, who was in charge of Disney live-action remakes.

Disney live-action remakes have been iffy

While Bailey saw big success with The Lion KingBeauty and the BeastAladdin, and The Jungle Book, the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid failed miserably.

Likewise,’ the Disney+ Pinocchio movie massively bombed with critics and fans (28% and 27%, respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes) and the same for Lady and The Tramp (67%/50%).

The critics don’t really matter but when you have a streaming service that aims to please its subscribers and they don’t like the content, then you have major problems.

We can also add the live-action Snow White starring Rachel Zegler has been delayed by a full year, so again, there seem to be obvious problems at Disney.

Bambi will be updated for modern audiences

Lindsey Anderson Beer, who is said to be writing Bambi, offered up the live-action remake will be a new take on the property, hinting the movie will be more sensitive to people’s feelings.

“There’s a treatment of, not to spoil the plot, there’s a treatment of the mom dying that I think some kids, some parents these days are more sensitive about than they were in the past,” she told Collider YouTube back in October while promoting the remake of her Pet Sematary: Bloodlines movie. “And I think that’s one of the reasons that they haven’t shown it to their children, but I do think that there is a way to update Bambi.”

She added, “And our take on it was- did give a little bit more of a scope to it. And I just think that to be able to bring it to life for kids these days in a way that maybe they relate to a little bit more would be of service to the original.”
