“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” posted Gunn.

How closely will Gunn’s version resemble the Donner films?
Regarding the John Williams music score, that was the music used for the Richard Donner movies starring Christopher Reeve as well as for Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns which starred Brandon Routh as the same version of the Man of Steel.
Donner’s first movie was also titled Superman: The Movie and the sequel was titled Superman II, so gunn dropping “Legacy” in favor of just “Superman” definitely brings up Donner vibes.
Speaking of, James Gunn is also using characters specifically created for the Donner movies in his version as Sara Sampaio is playing Eve Teschmacher, and Terence Rosemore is playing Otis.
With Gunn using Ms. Teschmacher and Otis, as well as Rachel Brosnahan teasing the John Willliams score, just how closely will Gunn’s version resemble the Donner version? Fans are already questioning how close it will be and are a bit concerned as Bryan Singer tried paying homage to the Donner films but it backfired.
Also, now that filming has started, while we see that David Corenswet has shaved his beard, we still haven’t had a full look at the new Man of Steel who sports a new buff bod.
Gunn’s Superman flies into theaters in 2025
Superman arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025.
The cast also includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion is Green Lantern Guy Gardner; Edi Gathegi is playing Mister Terrific; María Gabriela de Faría is playing The Engineer; Anthony Carrigan is Metamorpho; Skyler Gisondo is Jimmy Olsen, and Sean Gunn is also playing Maxwell Lord in the DCU, though it’s unconfirmed if he will be in Superman. Milly Alcock is also playing the DCU’s Supergirl, rumored to first appear in Superman prior to her solo Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film.
DC describes Gunn’s Superman as telling the story of the Man of Steel’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
