Russell T Davies Exits Doctor Who As BBC Cancels Christmas Special

Russell T Davies is done with Doctor Who.

The BBC announced Wednesday that Davies and production company Bad Wolf are exiting the series, the 2026 Christmas special is officially canceled, and the show is being put out to competitive tender, meaning the future of the franchise is now up for grabs.

The news confirms what we reported back in May, when rumors claimed the Christmas special was in trouble as the BBC reportedly struggled to find a new actor willing to take on the role.

BBC cancels the Doctor Who Christmas special

The BBC said in a statement that the decision to scrap the special “was not taken lightly” and acknowledged it would be “disappointing for fans,” but argued that rather than bridge the gap with a one-off, the broadcaster is choosing to “invest in the long-term future of the show” so that “when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory.”

That’s a notable reversal. Just last year, the BBC promised fans a “spectacular” Christmas special written by Davies for 2026, the same announcement that confirmed Disney+ was exiting its partnership with the BBC after the Ncuti Gatwa era failed to break through.

Doctor Who is being put out to tender

With Davies and Bad Wolf gone, the BBC says it will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year, in line with the BBC’s Charter requirements.

That means BBC Studios, which owns the rights, or an outside independent producer will bid for the chance to reinvent the Time Lord from the ground up.

“Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC and this tender underpins the BBC’s continued commitment to Doctor Who ensuring audiences will enjoy the show for years to come,” the BBC said.

In other words, a full reboot of how the show gets made is on the table: new producers, new creative direction, possibly a clean break from everything that came before.

Russell T Davies says goodbye

Davies announced his exit on Instagram, putting a positive spin on the show being put up for grabs.

And so GOODBYE from me to Doctor Who but HELLO to a big new future for the show, as the BBC announces it’s putting the show out to tender. As a result, there won’t be a Christmas Special – we only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there’s no need for it. You’ll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you’ll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off. So it’s worth it!

For the record: there was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor. You may disagree; fine, sit in that chair and wait to be proved right. You’ll wait a lonnng time 🪑 Now I’m as excited as anyone to see what comes next! Will they keep the theme tune? Will they lose the blue box? Will they bring back the Drahvin?! It’s all up for grabs, which is so Doctor Who, exciting and unpredictable and new! Here comes the future, vworp vworp 🌪️

‘There was no script’ — except the BBC said there was

Davies’ claim that “there was no script, I never wrote it” doesn’t quite line up with the record.

The BBC’s own announcement last year stated the 2026 Christmas special would be written by Davies, with Director of Drama Lindsay Salt saying the BBC was “delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026.”

Composer Murray Gold also reportedly said on the Half the Picture podcast that Davies had written multiple versions of the Christmas special script “depending on certain outcomes” — a comment Gold admitted he probably wasn’t supposed to share.

So either nothing was ever written, as Davies now claims, or scripts existed and got scrapped when the production couldn’t lock down a lead, which is exactly what the rumors said.

Doctor Who Billie Piper Regeneration

Exit follows years of backlash

Davies’ departure caps off years of declining fortunes for the franchise, stretching back through the Jodie Whittaker era and into the Disney+ Ncuti Gatwa era that Davies oversaw after returning in 2023.

The Disney deal was supposed to give Doctor Who a bigger budget and a global push. Instead, the Gatwa seasons failed to chart on Nielsen in the U.S., faced fan backlash over the creative direction, and ended with Disney+ walking away.

Gatwa himself famously told detractors, “Don’t watch. Turn off the TV. Go and touch grass” — and later joked that only “about 12” people watched his run.

Gatwa’s finale ended with the Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper, but Piper was never confirmed as the next Doctor, and Davies now says no actor was ever approached for the role.

The modern series, meanwhile, just found a new U.S. streaming home on AMC+.

Whoever wins the tender inherits a 60-year-old franchise with no lead actor, no showrunner, no broadcast partner outside the BBC, and a fanbase waiting to see if anyone can bring it back. As Davies put it: it’s all up for grabs.

So what actually happens now? Here’s a full breakdown of what’s next for Doctor Who — from how the tender process works, to the unresolved Billie Piper cliffhanger, to why new episodes may not arrive until 2028.
