Castlevania Revival Announced For 40th Anniversary With ‘Belmont’s Curse’

The doors of Castlevania are opening once again.

Konami has officially announced a revival of the long-running franchise to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original 1986 release of Akumajō Dracula. Along with a revamped portal site, a brand-new official X account has launched, promising updates, announcements, and what the production team calls “numerous new products” tied to the series.

Leading the charge is a brand-new 2D action-exploration title: Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Revealed

Titled Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, the new game is set 23 years after Castlevania: Dracula’s Curse and follows a young successor to Trevor Belmont.

The story moves the action to medieval Paris in 1499. Monstrous creatures erupt from the shadows as the city burns. Armed with the legendary Vampire Killer whip, the new Belmont ventures into the streets and a looming castle to stop the invasion and save the city.

Konami is partnering with Evil Empire and Motion Twin on the project — studios known for their work in the 2D action space — to deliver what’s described as a modern take on the franchise’s exploration-driven gameplay.

The tagline reads: “Crimson Curse — Will Your Fate Bloom in Despair or Salvation.”

The game is currently slated for a 2026 release.

Whip-Driven Combat Returns

The Vampire Killer is front and center.

Belmont’s Curse promises expanded whip mechanics, allowing players to swing like a trapeze artist and use the weapon creatively in fast-paced combat. It’s not just about cracking enemies from a distance — mobility and timing appear to be key elements of the new system.

Combat won’t rely solely on the whip, however. Players will have access to a wide range of weapons and abilities, requiring strategic planning during encounters.

Classic Castlevania staples are also returning:

  • Secret chambers and hidden items
  • Puzzle-heavy environments
  • Traps and environmental hazards
  • Memorable characters and powerful foes

The developers emphasize that success will require brains as much as brute force.

A New Gothic Art Style

Belmont’s Curse expands on the series’ gothic roots with a colorful new art style. While still leaning into dark castles and nightmarish creatures, the presentation aims to offer a fresh visual identity for modern platforms.

The revival appears designed to blend classic Castlevania DNA with contemporary 2D design sensibilities.

Platforms and Release

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is confirmed for:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Steam

The game is scheduled for release in 2026. An official rating has not yet been announced.

More Castlevania On The Way

Konami’s message makes it clear this is only the beginning. The 40th anniversary celebration will include additional projects and products tied to the franchise.

After years of relative dormancy outside of collections and adaptations, Castlevania is officially back in active development.

And if Belmont’s Curse is just the first step, fans can expect more nightmares to emerge from the darkness soon.
