MAJOR SPOILERS follow for Batman vs. Superman. We’ll start the article – with spoilers – following this image.

The end of Batman vs. Superman saw Superman sacrifice himself while taking on Doomsday, who could basically not be beaten as any time he was attacked, he would evolve to overcome the offensive. As Wonder Woman attacked Doomsday with her sword and cut off DD’s arm, DD grew a spike in its place. Superman grabbed the Kryptonite spear that Batman had created and plunged it into Doomsday’s chest. Doomsday had a hold of Superman, and likewise, plunged his spike-arm into Superman’s heart (obviously they couldn’t snap each other’s necks like the comic because Superman just did that to Zod in Man of Steel). So both Doomsday and Superman were killed. Following that, we see a funeral scene with Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince. Bruce says they need to form a team because a threat is coming etc. We see Lois and Ma Kent by Clark’s grave etc. Then dirt rises over Clark’s coffin, which is similar to what happened in Man of Steel when Clark first took flight.

EW.com caught up with director Zack Snyder who explained his reasoning behind killing Superman, with the obvious question in most fans’ minds being: What about Superman in Justice League?

SPOILERS follow for Justice League as well.

Regarding killing Superman, Snyder says:

“I felt like we had to kill Superman in this movie in order for us to have been serious with the entire premise of the film. And that’s not to say that he clearly is gone forever.”

Another reason why Snyder wanted Superman gone is so Batman can be the one to form the Justice League:

“I wanted Bruce Wayne to build the Justice League. I felt like with Superman around, it’s a different conversation when you create the Justice League, right?  It’s like, ‘Me and Superman, we want to make a Justice League.’ [Other heroes would be] like, ‘Okay, yeah, I’ll join!’ I just feel like Bruce Wayne having to go out and find these seven samurai by himself, that’s a lot more interesting of a premise.”

“I also I felt like, without Superman, there is definitely a vulnerability to the team that they’re gonna need to figure something out, you know?  Superman does represent the powerful. He’s the Michael Jordan of heroes, he’s gonna score.”

Zack Snyder then explains a reason why the Justice League forms:

And a part of the reason they team up is to find a way to bring Superman back.

Regarding bringing back Superman in Justice League, Snyder teases something more than the sun will have to do the job:

“He comes very close to death in space and the reason why we did that is because I wanted to show — and keep the idea in the viewer’s mind — that he can come pretty close to death and the sun can revive him, or he can be revived.,” Snyder says, although after Doomsday, the Justice League is going to have to take more drastic measures of resuscitation. “I think something more is gonna need to be done.”

Snyder then drops a bomb that Superman might be different when he comes back:

“I felt like there’s a mythological journey for Superman,” Snyder says. “There’s the birth, death, and resurrection thing. And when you bring him back, who knows what he is when he comes back.”

Our speculation:

It’s possible Superman might be a bad guy when he comes back as Henry Cavill has previously hinted his Superman is going to do battle with Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. If we put what Cavill has said with what Snyder says above together, it seems the Justice League might revive Superman, but something might initially go wrong, so they are forced to fight Superman. Recall what the Ezra Miller Flash cameo told Bruce : something about how Bruce was right all along, that Lois was the key, and to find the others. Another clue that Superman might go bad in the Justice League movie is that The Flash scene resembled the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game, which features a bad Superman after Lois dies.

Justice League starts filming April 11th for a November 17, 2017 release.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release directed by Zack Snyder starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch and Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves.

Synopsis:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
