The Wild Robot animated movie is confirmed to be getting a sequel; however, the same can’t be said for Transformers One.
The Wild Robot has been performing well at the box office and even passed Joker 2 on Wednesday which has continued into this weekend. The critics and the fans also love the movie with a shared 98% Rotten Tomatoes score and an “A” CinemaScore.
Writer/director Chris Sanders confirms The Wild Robot sequel
Following last week when the flick passed the $100 million mark in its second weekend (presently at $111M worldwide not including this weekend), writer/director Chris Sanders confirmed on Saturday that The Wild Robot sequel is happening at DreamWorks.
“100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one,” Sanders confirmed to Deadline.
The Wild Robot is outperforming Transformers One
The Wild Robot wasn’t the only animated movie to recently be released as Paramount and Chris Hemsworth’s Transformers One animated movie was released a week prior to The Wild Robot.
However, while The Wild Robot is getting all the attention, Transformers One, despite just as good a reception, seems to have been transformed into scrap metal.
The Wild Robot has better opening
For whatever reason, the audience didn’t turn out to watch Transformers One. For a comparison, Transformers One opened to $24.6M while The Wild Robot opened to $35.7M.
The Wild Robot made more than double in week two
In their second weekend, Transformers One dropped 62.8% to $9.1M, while The Wild Robot held on and only dropped 47.2% and made more than double that of Transformers One, $18.8M.
No competition for week three
For the third weekend, Transformers One dropped another 41.2% with $5.3M. The Wild Robot? It’s expected to bring in $13.5M this weekend and take the #2 spot behind Terrifier 3, while in its fourth weekend Transformers One is estimated to bring in $4.1M.
It’s safe to say The Wild Robot has legs while Transformers One has a bunch of flat tires. The U.S. audience also came out for The Wild Robot, but not as much for Transformers One. Check out the box office below.
What happened with Transformers One?
I think what happened with Transformers One is that Paramount didn’t do a good enough job marketing the flick. I still have no idea if it’s a Transformers “Toy Story” movie or something similar to what I grew up as a kid, much more serious.
There is also the fact the recent Michael Bay movies weren’t good and both Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts weren’t exactly blockbusters. Transformers One looks like something that should have been released on Paramount+. Cross your fingers they can do GI Joe vs Transformers justice.
