AMC ORDERS NEW LATE-NIGHT TALK SHOW, “GEEKING OUT” (Working Title)

HOSTED BY KEVIN SMITH AND GREG GRUNBERG, SHOW WILL TAKE TIMELY LOOK AT POP CULTURE THROUGH A FANBOY LENS

AMC today announced that it has ordered a new late-night talk show, “Geeking Out” (Working Title). Hosted by Kevin Smith (“Comic Book Men,” “Clerks”) and Greg Grunberg (“Heroes, “Heroes Reborn” “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens”), the 30-minute show will take a timely look at pop culture through a fanboy lens and feature talk, clips, celebrity interviews and out-of-the-studio segments. The series is produced by Matador Content and The Weinstein Company in association with Bandwagon Media with Jay Peterson, Patrick Reardon, Smith and Grunberg serving as executive producers. The show is expected to premiere with a special episode covering Comic-Con International: San Diego in late July, with eight more episodes to run weekly starting in late summer.

“Kevin and Greg are both true fans of this content, and share a deep passion for talking about it, and engaging other fans about it. But it is their natural chemistry as hosts that really brings this idea together,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV. “As part of our growing non-fiction slate, we wanted to create a broadly entertaining venue for hardcore fans and general viewers where we can break down all things fanboy on a weekly basis; and we wanted to bring those fans great interviews and exclusive looks into the world of fanboy culture. We look forward to sharing this highly entertaining duo with our viewers.”

“AMC has been my TV family for five seasons of ‘Comic Book Men’ now, so I know that ‘Geeking Out’ is in the perfect, fan-friendly network hands,” said Smith. “I can’t wait to lose fluids on the airwaves of my favorite channel over the genre gems we’re gonna get insider access to due to gregarious Greg’s bonafides! And to make it even more of a family affair, ‘Geeking Out’ lets me work with the Weinsteins again – the two guys who started my career 22 years ago! I’m lucky to be working at all, let alone working with friends and family on a dream show where all we do is talk about all the media that makes us moist!”

“I get all my work from my friends. Now it’s time for me to take advantage of those relationships even more,” said Grunberg. “I am going to get every single genre-based writer, director and actor I know to come on our show and geek out with us. And they’re going to thank me for it. I love how Kevin Smith smells and we fit together like two hibernating fan-bears. Thanks to AMC and the Weinsteins, the rest of the world is going to get to see what’s inside our dark, dank geek cave. It’s going to be a fun 30 minutes, if I can just get Kevin to stop talking and smoking.”

AMC’s opportunistic approach to non-fiction has allowed the network to identify and bring to air a unique mix of shows that complement its scripted originals and movies. The network’s growing non-fiction slate includes “Talking Dead,” the #1 talk show on television, “Comic Book Men” and new originals including “The Making of the Mob,” “The American West,” special events like the recent “Lennon 75” concert and the forthcoming “Ride With Norman Reedus.”

Overseeing “Geeking Out” from AMC are Eliot Goldberg, senior vice president of non-fiction and alternative programming, Marco Bresaz, vice president of non-fiction and alternative programming and Kelly Nash, director of non-fiction and alternative programming.

George Romero’s Empire of the Dead Coming To AMC

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22857:]]

We have The Walking Dead, Fear The Walking Dead and now a third zombie series is coming to AMC with George Romero’s Empire of the Dead, which is not related to the Robert Kirkman-created Walker universe.

The news comes from comic book artist Arthur Suydam who did the variant cover art for Romero’s Marvel comics series of the same name.

“The series I just finished up for Marvel Comics as a matter of fact, so this is me and George Romero, and this just got signed by AMC. So it’s going to be the next big zombie series on AMC,” Suydam told WHAS11 while attending the Wizard World Louisville Comic-Con.

Word first hit about the Empire of the Dead TV series back in May with mention the series will be written by Geroge Romero and longtime partner Peter Grunwald, and executive produced by Romero and Grunwald with Demarest’s Sam Englebardt and William D. Johnson.

Empire of the Dead is set in NYC and features vampires as well. Here is a description of the first issued published back in January 2014:

ZOMBIE GODFATHER GEORGE ROMERO UNLEASHES HIS NEXT UNDEAD EPIC—AS AN ALL-NEW MARVEL COMIC! Welcome to New York City years after the undead plague has erupted—but just because Manhattan has been quarantined, don’t think that everyone inside is safe! Not only do flesh-eaters roam within Manhattan, but there’s another ancient predator about to take a bite out of the Big Apple! Plus: It’s a terrorizing team-up in variant cover form when the Zombie Godfather unites with the Zombie King – Arthur Suydam!

Watch: Humans Teaser Trailer; New AMC SF Series

Check out a teaser above for the new science-fiction series coming to AMC this Summer, Humans.

Humans, a bold new eight-part drama series from AMC, Channel 4 and Kudos, is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a ‘Synth’ – a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar to its live counterpart.

Written by British writing partnership Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (Spooks, Spooks: The Greater Good), Humans is based on the award-winning Swedish sci-fi drama Real Humans.

“A lot of different types of jobs are automated now,” says co-writer Sam Vincent. “Everything is automated with a kiosk now and there’s no guy at the counter. There’s a real explosion of that happening and we wanted to reflect those social and economic trends…If we had something like the Synths we have on our show, that effect would be magnified a hundredfold, and that was quite interesting. We’re really going quite deep into how society would change.”

Humans, which stars William Hurt, Katherine Parkinson, Tom Goodman-Hill, Colin Morgan, Rebecca Front, Neil Maskell, and Gemma Chan, recently finished filming in and around London. The series will premiere on AMC this summer (2015).

AMC Moving Forward On Preacher TV Series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18111:]]

AMC has ordered a pilot for the Preacher TV series, which is based on the Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon DC Comics Vertigo comic book of the same name.

The series is being put together by This Is The End writers/directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for Sony TV and AMC Studios.

Rogen and Goldberg are directing the Preacher pilot; Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad) wrote the script and will serve as showrunner.

Peacher follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned His responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making Him answer for His dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers – a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.

“Every once in a while you find a project where all the elements line up beautifully. With Preacher, it starts with a bold, compelling, and thought-provoking comic book series from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and a whole lot of fans who already know Jesse Custer, Cassidy, and Tulip,” Joel Stillerman, AMC’s EVP of original programming, said in a released statement. “Add to that the passionate and talented Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin, an incredible producing team in Neal Moritz, the Original Film team and our good friends at Sony Pictures Television, and we have everything we need to be VERY excited to move forward on Preacher.”

The Preacher series will start development next Summer for a 2016 release.

Sons of Anarchy Dave Erickson To Co-Write The Walking Dead Spinoff Series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14597:]]

AMC continues to move forward with The Walking Dead spinoff series as it’s learned Dave Erickson, writer on Sons of Anarchy, will co-write and executive produce the new series with The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman.

Deadline reported the news as AMC made announcements about their upcoming new shows at their Upfront, which sees networks announce important news for advertisers.

Details are slim regarding the new spinoff series for The Walking Dead, with speculation ranging from the new series following a different group of characters in another part of the United States or even another country, to possibly a prequel.

Kirkman has made it be known that The Walking Dead spinoff will not be a part of the AMC series, but independent of the show, which looks to mean all-new characters and storylines.

According to reports, the new The Walking Dead spinoff is slated for a 2015 debut on AMC, so more details should be coming forward soon.

Comic Book Men Renewed For Fourth Season; Spinoffs Announced

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14596:]]

AMC has announced that Comic Book Men has been renewed for a fourth season with plans for a new spinoff series starring Robert Bruce and another new show based on Kevin Smith’s “Hollywood Babble-On” podcast.

Comic Book Men is a reality-based TV series set at Smith’s comic book shop in New Jersey featuring long time friends Walt Flanagan and Bryan Johnson along with Mike Zapcic and Ming Chen.

Robert Bruce is the series expert on all things pop culture and is frequently featured on Comic Book Men offering advice and knowledge on a range of comic book items and more. His new AMC series is described as seeing Bruce on a cross-country search for collectibles and fan boy items at estate sales, auctions and flea markets.

THR reports that AMC will be filming a pilot for the new Kevin Smith “Hollywood Babble-On” based series with a weekly show hoping to come from it which is said to need a bit of tweaking for TV.

“I always describe it as Entertainment Tonight but filthy,” Kevin Smith told THR. “We sit there and make fun of our industry betters. We bring an inside perspective. We’re not the biggest winners on the planet, so we can grouse as well. It has a fun dynamic of salty and sweet. It’s a night club show, so we’re working with the good folks to try and crack the code of how to turn that podcast we record live every week and turn it into a TV show.”

Comic Book Men airs Sundays at midnight on AMC.

Cosmic Book News Managing Editor Byron Brewer recently spoke with Walt Flanagan about Comic Book Men as well.

Exclusive: Comic Book Men’s Walt Flanagan looks back on eventful year

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14330:]]

As AMC’s Comic Book Men gets set to wrap up its current season, we thought we would check in with old friend Walt Flanagan to see how things are doing on the other side of the doors of Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash.

This year saw many highs for the show and the artist, including the publication of Cryptozoic Man by Dynamite Entertainment, a project that first began as a plot prop on CBM.

Walt, who is just the kindest man this side of Krypton, continues to co-host the “Tell ‘Em Steve-Dave!” podcast with longtime friends Bryan Johnson and Brian Quinn.

He met exclusively with Cosmic Book News M.E. Byron Brewer at a nameless LCS the other side of Red Bank, New Jersey, to discuss the show, the comic book and more.

Cosmic Book News: With only a handful of episodes left, Walt, what would you say was this season’s highlight thus far?

Walt Flanagan: Hmmm … for me? The launch of Cryptozoic Man at the Baltimore con. Truly a dream come true.

CBN: In your opinion, how has the show and the cast — you — changed since the comic book store doors opened up to cameras in Season One?

Walt Flanagan: Wow, that’s a tough question … have I changed? I don’t think so. I’d be disappointed in myself if I did change. But really only someone else other than me is more qualified to answer the question, “Have I  changed?”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14331:]]

CBN: Who has been your favorite guest star, either this season or of all time, on Comic Book Men? (I just loved the George Perez episode.)

Walt Flanagan: The retired New Jersey Devils … that was surreal, almost like it didn’t happen.

CBN: What was it like to have Dynamite Entertainment and Nick Barrucci publish a miniseries based on a plot thread from Comic Book Men?

Walt Flanagan: Amazing. I can’t thank Nick and Dynamite enough. I really enjoyed working under the Dynamite banner.

CBN: What was the reaction to Cryptozoic Man?

Walt Flanagan: I thought the reaction was pretty good. Even before the episode where we launched the book aired, I pre-sold the 4-issue series on my podcast “Tell ‘Em Steve-Dave!” and we pre-sold 20,000 copies grand total of the four issues. That blew me away. Our listeners really supported the comic and I will never forget that support.

CBN: What did you think of the book, looking back? It was wild having pseudo-reality become reality and then become pseudo-reality on TV!

Walt Flanagan: I think it’s my best work. That has a lot to do with my inker, Chris Ivy, and colorist, Wayne Jansen, who both did a wonderful job! I had so much fun designing weird creatures and Bryan really gave me a story where I could just go crazy a little doing my favorite thing: drawing monsters!

CBN: What was the biggest surprise this season?

Walt Flanagan: The kiss?

CBN: Have we heard anything from AMC about the “next” season?

Walt Flanagan: Not yet.

CBN: What has it been like for you at the cons and other personal appearances since the advent of Comic Book Men?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14332:]]

Walt Flanagan: Well, I do get noticed more at cons, but that’s understandable. That’s our target audience.

CBN: What has not happened on CBM that you would really love to see happen before the series ends?

Walt Flanagan: Surpass Cops as the longest-running unscripted/reality series?

CBNWell, any projects in the present or future that you would like to discuss?

Walt Flanagan: We just announced a “Tell ‘Em Steve-Dave!” Claymation movie earlier this month. Look for it in 2015.

Cosmic Book News would like to thank Walt Flanagan for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our very fanboy M.E.’s questions.

“Comic Book Men” airs Sundays on AMC!
