James Gunn confirms that Nicholas Hoult is indeed playing Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy.
The co-head of the DCU confirmed the casting on Threads mentioning their version of Lex will be different from anything seen before.
“Yes, finally I can answer, Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy and I couldn’t be happier. We went out to dinner last night to celebrate & discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget. ‘But, James, we heard this weeks ago, why didn’t you tell us it was true?’ Because, although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain,” said Gunn.
Michael Cudlitz is playing Lex Luthor in the last season of Superman and Lois and Jon Cryer recently played the character in the Supergirl TV series. Jesse Eisenberg was Zack Snyder’s choice in the DCEU, and Kevin Spacey played Lex in Superman Returns, with Gene Hackman in the Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve movies. Perhaps the best rendition of the character, Michael Rosenbaum played Lex Luthor in Smallville. John Shea also played the baddie in Superman & Lois starring Dean Cain and Terri Hatcher.

David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent and Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan is playing Lois Lane. Isabela Merced is Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion is Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi is playing Mister Terrific. María Gabriela de Faría is playing The Engineer from The Authority described as a “villain,” with Anthony Carrigan cast as Metamorpho.
Skyler Gisondo is Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio is Eve Teschmacher. Brainiac might also be in the movie. Sean Gunn is playing Maxwell Lord. The cast will also include possibly the new Supergirl and others.
Superman: Legacy is described by DC as telling the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
