James Gunn on Supergirl
James Gunn has repeatedly emphasized how different this Supergirl is from any previous version. He explained that Superman grew up on Earth with loving parents from infancy, while Kara spent her first fourteen years trapped on a dying fragment of Krypton, surrounded by death and brutality before arriving on Earth as a young girl. That contrast shapes everything about her. Gunn describes her as far more hardened and intense, nothing like the traditional Supergirl audiences are used to.
He also called Supergirl a “rock & roll film,” rougher and more chaotic, driven by a protagonist who has survived experiences Superman never faced. Gunn says the DCU’s Kara is “kind of a mess” because of the trauma she endured, and the movie leans into that with a full space-adventure approach inspired by the comic. He believes the film delivers a unique take on the genre and says he can’t wait for people to see it.
