Star Wars: ‘New Jedi Order’ Writer Honoring Tradition

The new writer on the Daisy Ridley and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Star Wars: New Jedi Order movie (rumored title), George Nolfi, actually sounds like he knows what he is talking about.

While promoting the release of his new film he directed starring Anthony Mackie, Elevation (a single father and two women venture from the safety of their homes to face monstrous creatures to save the life of a young boy), he talks Star Wars.

Needs to honor tradition

Nolfi shared insights into his approach with Film Stories.

“The way I approach it is, you look at what’s come before you, you look at the broad ideas of what they want to do,” he said, adding that he’ll put the story together from his ideas and the ideas from Lucasfilm, Disney, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. “Try and imagine characters, and then you present that with an understanding that it needs to honor, obviously, a long, incredible tradition.”

Nolfi is familiar with the inspirations of George Lucas

Prior to becoming a screenwriter, the site knew that George Nolfi studied philosophy and politics and asked if that would make its way into his Star Wars movie.

“If you think about George Lucas, the six movies that he did, and the universe that he created, it’s actually very steeped in broad notions of politics. It’s not talking about today, per se, but there’s the Empire’s Nazism slash Roman Empire,” he said.

Nolfi added, “The democracy of the Roman Empire collapsing and becoming an empire and the perennial story of human beings organizing themselves and against chaos, and then the tools that help human societies tamp down on chaos becomes oppression.”

Knows Star Wars is a science fantasy or space opera

Nolfi also says you can adapt things but not make them out to be preachy.

“So that is really very core to what I think George Lucas was trying to talk about,” he said. “And one of the wonderful things about science fiction and Star Wars – which is more almost science fantasy or space opera – is that you can raise the deepest issues without it feeling like a philosophy class, or a political science class, or something I read in the newspaper today…”

Star Wars: New Jedi Order doesn’t have a release date as of yet. George Nolfi is also known for the Allegiance TV series, The Adjustment Bureau, and The Bourne Ultimatum.
