It’s again rumored that Lucasfilm is developing a Darth Maul series for the Disney Plus streaming network.

The info comes from Giant Freakin Robot who offers that Darth Maul will be the latest Star Wars character to get a backstory in the form of a live-action Disney Plus series, which is claimed to be now in development.

No specific details are known about the project, but Darth Maul happens to be a big-time fan-favorite Star Wars character, who similar to Boba Fett, is a part of the enigmatic Star Wars mythos, and we see Boba Fett now has his own series.

Following having first appeared in Phantom Menace, where Maul was seemingly killed off, Darth Maul was confirmed to have survived in The Clone Wars animated series and then appeared in the Star Wars Rebels animated series and the Han Solo movie where concept art showed off Maul’s new cybernetic legs (pictured below).

While Obi-Wan did end up killing Darth Maul in the Rebels animated series for good, it’s likely that the Disney Plus series takes place prior to his death.

Interestingly enough, similar to Boba Fett, Darth Maul is also a leader of a crime syndicate, so if the timelines can match up, maybe the Darth Maul Disney Plus series will be able to take place in the timeline of The Mandalorian, as Darth Maul’s story also connects to Mandalore, the home of the Mandalorians.

Darth Maul projects have been rumored for years, and back in 2013, insiders filled me in that a Darth Maul movie was being thought about set between Episode III and IV involving Ewan McGregor reprising the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in his exile on Tatooine, with Darth Maul hunting down Obi-Wan where a plot point involved a 5-year-old Luke Skywalker somehow tied into the story possibly as bait for Obi-Wan (though this sounds like they used this idea for Rebels).

Ewan McGregor is now returning in the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus series along with Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader, so maybe there will be something about Darth Maul as well.

A Darth Maul origin video game was also axed by Disney about the character’s time becoming a Sith, which could also be a possible idea for a series.

“We wanted to show what he went through to become a Sith. Showcase the torture the Emperor put him through,” Red Fly Studio CEO and owner Dan Borth said in a Reddit AMA back in 2015. “Show how you as the player would have made the same mistakes and ended up a Sith.”
