This weekend sees the release of Sony’s highly anticipated animated Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse movie, which is eyeing a $30-35 million opening weekend for the U.S.
It’s possible the number could be on the low side because there is huge buzz surrounding the movie, and in addition, reviews are overwhelmingly positive as Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has a near perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 99%.
Deadline also offers up that the buzz surrounding the Spider-Verse is greater than that of Sony’s recent hit Spider-Man spinoff, Venom, which went on to make $80.2 million for its own opening weekend.
Sony has a lot of faith in the flick as they already announced a Spider-Verse sequel that will continue the further adventures of Miles Morales.
An animated “Spider-Women” spinoff is also said to be in development featuring Spider-Verse breakout character Spider-Gwen as well as possibly Spider-Woman, Spider-Girl, Madame Web and Silk.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse opens this Thursday with advance screenings; it’s said the movie cost around $90 million to make.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.
